Should You Buy a Used Sewing Machine?

If your dollars are limited, it makes sense to buy a good used machine than a cheap new machine.

When buying a sewing machine - used or new - know the functions you want before you buy.

When looking at sewing machines - used or new - "test drive" the machine to insure it has the feel with which you are comfortable.

Once a sewing machine has been purchased, keep it clean, lint free, and properly oiled.

Most importantly, add sewing machine knobs and pulls  to your purchase to make it your own! 

Pros to buying a used sewing machine:

If you can find a used sewing machine that has the stitches you feel you need for your skill level, the cost can be significantly reduced by buying used.  When bought from a sewing machine dealer, a used machine will usually come with a warranty.  Also, if purchased from a dealer, it is probable that the used machine was a trade-in, which indicates the previous owner liked the brand enough to upgrade.  A gently used sewing machine generally has all the "kinks" worked out.  Typically from a dealer, used sewing machines will be cleaned and repaired, if necessary, before resale.  Some of the older models can stand up to more "abuse" than newer models, such as sewing through a significant thickness.

Buying a used sewing machine may not be for you...

If you are considering buying a used sewing machine, keep in mind that it may be difficult - or impossible - to get parts for older machines, particularly if that manufacturer is no longer in business.  You may be unable to test out the machine to your satisfaction at a garage sale, estate sale, or auction where you find the used machine.  Unlike buying a used sewing machine from a dealer, if purchased from a private seller, no warranty will be included.  Keep in mind that used machines can't always handle newer fabrics, such as polar fleece.
